Case Study: Easy-to-Use Fast Charging Stations at Dokkyo Medical University Nikko Medical Centre

September 17, 2024

As one of Dokkyo Medical University's three affiliated hospitals, the Dokkyo Medical University Nikko Medical Centre is located in the popular tourist city of Nikko. In January 2023, the hospital was relocated from Koutoku to Moritomo, within the city, and now serves as a crucial healthcare facility for the local community, equipped with the latest medical technology and state-of-the-art devices. Recently, four PC Locs BOLT 12 USB-C PD Charging Stations were introduced for the nurses at the centre.

The hospital provides both acute care and comprehensive rehabilitation services and plays a vital role in delivering medical care to remote areas. The four-story centre features advanced facilities on the 1st and 2nd floors for patient care, while the 3rd and 4th floors house 199 inpatient beds. From the beginning, the centre has prioritised work style reforms through medical digital transformation (DX), creating a comfortable working environment for its large medical staff. As part of this initiative, iPhones have been adopted for in-hospital use.

These iPhones are equipped with essential apps for efficient operations, including secure chat for quick communication and electronic medical records with voice input. To ensure these iPhones are always ready for use, BOLT 12 charging stations have been installed in reception areas and staff stations on each floor.

Before the relocation, careful consideration was given to managing the 50 newly introduced iPhones in the ward. The BOLT was chosen for its many benefits, including pre-wired charging cables for immediate use after installation and the ability to fully charge 12 iPhones in about an hour.

Since its introduction, the ease of inserting and removing iPhones, the fast charging speed, and features like the LED indicator showing the charging status have proven highly beneficial. A representative from the administrative department responsible for device management shared positive feedback, stating, "Charging each device individually prevents cables from getting tangled. It's simple and easy to use."

The digital transformation of healthcare is crucial for improving productivity and implementing work style reforms in hospitals and clinics. However, as the number of smartphones and tablets increases, managing charging locations, keeping track of devices, and checking their charging status can become challenging. To create an efficient work environment for busy doctors, nurses, and staff, it's essential to avoid issues like tangled charging cables and low battery devices.

At the Dokkyo Medical University Nikko Medical Centre, the introduction of iPhones and BOLT charging stations has ensured smooth device management from the time of relocation until now. To fully realise the benefits of medical DX, it's important to consider not just the introduction and use of new systems but also the methods of device management beforehand.
